John Hashim left Dartmouth at seventeen in 1940 and served aboard Liverpool, York, Kandahar, and Valiant during the Mediterranean war. His journal runs to 29 September 1941, ending because the notebook ran out of pages. Navigation examinations and ordinary duties sit alongside exercises and the losses on the Tobruk run. Entries read aloud describe plotting practice, torpedo firing with Jervis, and screening Valiant. His transfer from Kandahar to Valiant in July 1941 also shows how a junior officer experienced a succession of ships during an active campaign.
