Jorge Montt from fleet command to the presidency

Admiral Jorge Montt’s path from Pacific War service to congressional leadership and the presidency embodied the navy’s influence over Chile’s postwar settlement.

Notes

After victory, the congressional authorities restored dismissed judges, reorganized the state, and called elections under the existing electoral law. Jorge Montt then moved from leading the congressional naval cause into the presidency, making naval authority central to the political settlement. His earlier career included command of Esmeralda, service at Angamos, and direction of the Callao blockade, giving him operational credibility as well as factional leadership. The navy supplied the winning side with senior officers who helped shape the government that followed.
