Joint push through the Dardanelles

The alternative plan combines dreadnought cover, expendable pre-dreadnought lines, minesweepers, small craft, and landings against forts.

Notes

The proposed force would put eight or ten modified pre-dreadnoughts in the first two lines and some reserve positions, with Queen Elizabeth or other dreadnought-era ships and the rest of the fleet behind them for gunfire support. Troops would land at selected points as the column advanced, forcing the forts to respond to attacks from land as well as bombardment from the water. Small boats and minesweepers would work ahead under covering fire. Landing the troops alongside the advancing fleet would avoid a long march along the peninsula from a distant beachhead. The proposed advance through the Dardanelles to Constantinople was expected to be painful, with the possibility of losing a leading ship, but viable.
