John Quilliam was impressed in 1794 and had become a midshipman by 1797. In 1805 he served as first lieutenant aboard HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. That placed him in a senior shipboard appointment eleven years after entering the Navy as a pressed man. His rapid advancement was unusual, although the transition from impressed sailor to volunteer was much more common.
