John de Warenne's wardship and royal service

John de Warenne's minority shows how royal wardship, inherited estates, custody of Scottish claimants, and ceremonial knighting linked noble households to the crown.

Notes

John lost his mother at age seven and succeeded to the Warenne earldom while still underage, placing his lands under royal control. Custodians managed the estates, while Edward I funded John and could demand provisions such as forty barrels of preserved deer. John also became guardian to Edward Balliol before the Scottish claimant passed into royal custody. His early coming of age formed part of Edward I's wider scheme, including marriage to Joan of Bar and the mass knighting ceremony around Prince Edward. Inheritance, wardship, marriage, and custody all bound the noble household to royal policy.
