John Byron's career began with George Anson's circumnavigation, although Byron's ship was wrecked off southern Chile. He later served as governor of Newfoundland, completed his own circumnavigation as a commodore, and fought in the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. Repeated storms and wrecks earned him the nickname Foul-weather Jack. He commanded the British station at Grenada and survived the defeat, but never returned to active seagoing command after resigning that summer. His descendants included the poet Lord Byron and Admiral George Anson Byron.
