Rodney avoided serving on Byng's court martial by pleading illness and later tried to have the death sentence commuted, even though he strongly disapproved of Byng's conduct. The execution warned that connection and status did not excuse failure to engage. The case made withdrawal without a persuasive operational reason especially dangerous for senior officers. The Navy subsequently protected admirals from another such outcome partly by insisting that commanders show unmistakable willingness to fight when circumstances allowed.

Byng's execution demonstrated that wealth and patronage could not protect an admiral who withdrew without convincingly trying to fight.
