Vichy and Allied service implied very different fates

A Vichy Joffre would have been a British target, while an Allied ship could have conducted real carrier operations in Norway or other northern theatres.

Notes

At 18,000 tons, Joffre fits the light fleet carrier category and invites comparison with British and American light-carrier construction during the war. A ship under Vichy control would likely have become a priority British target in harbour. An Allied Joffre, by contrast, might have been especially useful in Norway or other northern operations. Its speed and purpose-built arrangement would have allowed genuine fleet employment rather than the transport role that occupied much of Béarn's war. Mediterranean deployment appears less attractive because heavy bombs, armour-piercing bombs, and dive bombers would expose the design to severe air attack. The counterfactual distinguishes the ship's technical potential from the political alignment and theatre that would determine its value.
