Offsetting the flight deck 6.83 meters to port counterbalances the island and 130 mm turrets while preserving a constant-width landing area. Concentrating the heavy anti-aircraft battery atop the island gives the guns arcs to both sides without port-side sponsons. In theory this avoids obstructing flight operations, but firing over crews handling aviation fuel, bombs, torpedoes, and ammunition creates an obvious practical risk. The exceptionally long island also increases turbulence and displaces boat stowage, forcing smaller craft beneath the port overhang. Solving the stability problem therefore creates connected tradeoffs in aviation, gunnery, and deck layout.

Joffre's asymmetric flight deck and island tradeoffs
Joffre offsets its flight deck to balance a heavy island and preserve deck width, but the solution concentrates major anti-aircraft guns and lengthens the island.
