Why submarines still depend on shore support

Submarines can hide below the surface, but their bases, factories, fuel, and spare-parts supply remain exposed.

Notes

The video uses submarine warfare to show why a seemingly inexpensive answer is never independent of infrastructure. Hardened U-boat pens may protect boats during repair, but they do not make fuel, supply lines, and factories equally survivable. A navy that neglects those support systems can lose its operational capacity even when its weapons remain difficult to destroy directly. The German World War II example makes sustainment, rather than the submarine alone, the true unit of analysis.
