Combined arms has long applied to fleets as well as armies. A game fleet built mainly from destroyers and battleships can exploit simplified demands, but real forces need cruisers for worldwide presence, deterrence, and managing conflicts and relationships. Those missions help explain why many modern escorts are cruiser sized. Games also make extreme specialisation easier by assuming that systems work reliably and opponents compete on an even playing field. Real operational art seeks to create an unfair fight. Leadership therefore has to preserve a useful combination of capabilities while assessing a promising new technology.
