Old battleships can enforce convoy mission discipline

A slow older battleship could guard a convoy without tempting an aggressive commander to abandon it in pursuit of a faster enemy.

Notes

The convoy example ends with a subtle Royal Navy design and leadership point. An older battleship lacked the speed to chase a modern enemy, so its commander could not easily abandon the convoy for a seemingly attractive engagement. A King George V or modernized Queen Elizabeth might create exactly that temptation in a service that cultivated aggression. Force assignment could compensate for predictable excesses in command culture.
