Jervis in Parliament and peacetime deterrence

Follow Jervis from a short-lived commodore's command into marriage, parliamentary politics, and flag deployments during European and Nootka Sound tensions.

Notes

Peace ended Jervis's brief 1782 commodore's deployment and gave him the opportunity to marry Martha Parker and enter the House of Commons. He shifted constituencies and sometimes voted against William Pitt despite generally intending to support him. His flag appointments included deployments during tensions surrounding Prussian intervention in the Netherlands and the Nootka Sound crisis, showing how peacetime fleets served diplomatic deterrence. In Parliament he spoke mainly on naval affairs, usually backing the service while criticizing the Navy Board or ministers when he thought their demands and administration fell short. He left parliamentary politics in 1794 as active flag command became the center of his career.
