Could Jellicoe have replaced Beatty before Jutland, and who should have taken the Battle Cruiser Fleet?
Short answerJellicoe could have tried despite Beatty's political strength. Hood, rather than Sturdee, was the more useful and manageable replacement.
NotesJellicoe could potentially have removed Beatty, but Beatty possessed powerful political connections and family money. If a replacement were forced, Hood makes more sense than Sturdee. Sturdee remained valuable inside the Grand Fleet succession structure, whereas Hood had channel command experience and could move from a battle squadron into control of the battlecruisers. Hood would also depend on Jellicoe for the appointment, reducing the problem of an independently powerful subordinate.
