The Jellicoe family and George's wartime career

A short family interlude links John Jellicoe's 1902 marriage and six children to the unconventional Second World War service of his son George.

Notes

Jellicoe married Florence in July 1902, during the Admiralty interval before HMS Drake, and the couple eventually had one son and five daughters. They appear to have had a close and supportive marriage. Their son George later served with the Coldstream Guards and became associated with both the Special Air Service and Special Boat Service during the Second World War. The brief comparison suggests a very different expression of calculated courage from his father's battleship and staff career. The two careers connect one family's service to both fleet command and the emergence of modern special operations.
