Dreadnought, three Bellerophons, and three St Vincents made a group of seven closely related ships. A battle squadron usually contained eight or nine vessels at this point, but the seven ships had enough firepower to begin forming one before further additions. Jellicoe inherited these designs too late to reshape them extensively. His work chiefly involved checking their plans and construction and approving them for service.
