What a new Third Sea Lord inherited and left behind

A continuing construction program gave Jellicoe different degrees of influence over ships at different stages of design and building.

Notes

Warship construction continued when the Third Sea Lord changed. Jellicoe inherited ships already building, designs approaching their orders, and opportunities to create new classes during his own tenure. He also developed ideas that a successor would have to finish. Assessing his influence therefore requires separating inherited work, limited modifications, his own programs, and projects left for the next officeholder.
