Japan's fleet lacked enough mobile repair capacity

More floating docks could have separated Japanese warship construction from forward repair and eased a critical wartime bottleneck.

Notes

The floating-dock lesson also applies to the Imperial Japanese Navy's prewar industrial problem. Japanese fixed yards were needed for construction, yet the fleet also required repair capacity across a vast operating area. Building or acquiring more floating docks could have moved maintenance away from scarce construction berths and closer to forward forces. Older foreign docks might also have supplemented domestic production. Japan's failure to develop enough of this infrastructure becomes an example of disconnected planning between fleet ambition, shipbuilding, and long-term support.
