When Japan could detect enemy radar

Detecting a radar transmission and locating its source are different problems, both relevant to British night strikes in the Indian Ocean.

Question

Did Japan have the ability to detect enemy radar at that stage of the war?

Short answer

No operational capability is identified for the Indian Ocean raid; Japanese radar development was still under way.

Notes

Japanese forces lacked the proposed radar-detection capability at the time of the Indian Ocean raid, although development was under way. A receiver can listen for an enemy set when its operating frequency is known. Finding a transmission still leaves the separate problem of locating its source. British night operations therefore benefited from an asymmetry in radar use and warning.
