What foreign destroyer studies offered Japan

Extensive observation of foreign destroyers offered Japan design lessons, but the operational requirements still had to be its own.

Notes

Japan studied French and British destroyers as well as the performance of its own ships. It also analysed opposing navies and spent considerable time alongside the Italians. Japanese observers served with the British and French navies, giving the navy substantial material for comparing destroyer capabilities. The criticism is that collecting this information did not produce enough development beyond the earlier designs.
