Why Japan calls the Izumo a destroyer

Japanese naming traditions and defence policy explain why a carrier-shaped ship entered service as a helicopter destroyer.

Notes

Japanese escort terminology explains the destroyer label. The term is better understood as escort ship, and its familiar English rendering reflects the destroyer's prominence as an escort in the 1920s and 1930s. Japanese naval ranks and ship categories do not always map neatly onto English terminology because they also carry Japanese historical and cultural meanings. The Maritime Self-Defense Force's central missions are protecting sea lines of communication and Japan's exclusive economic zone, so an escort-centered fleet description fits its defensive purpose. The translated constitutional restriction applies to attack aircraft carriers rather than every ship that operates aircraft. In this interpretation, the prohibited type was associated with offensive nuclear-strike aviation, leaving room to assess defensive carrier aviation by its mission rather than its silhouette alone.
