Japan weighs nuclear power against historical experience

Japan has the nuclear industry to power advanced naval weapons, but its historical experience makes any reactor-at-sea decision unusually weighty.

Notes

Japan's large civil nuclear industry gives it a substantial technical base if railguns ultimately demand reactor-level power generation. That option carries cultural and historical burdens that most other naval powers do not face in the same way. Choosing nuclear propulsion would therefore signal that the weapon's defensive value justified confronting those concerns. The strategic purpose is to use the sea as defensive depth and engage threats before they reach the Japanese home islands. The same pressure may also drive Japanese engineers to find a non-nuclear solution that other navies could adopt.
