Were the Janissaries still the formidable soldiers they had been in the early Ottoman period?
Short answerNo; repeated concessions had eroded the discipline and institutional rules behind their earlier effectiveness.
NotesThe feared early Janissary institution was not unchanged by the nineteenth century. Rules that had separated the corps from ordinary family inheritance and helped sustain discipline were gradually relaxed. Allowing Janissaries' children into the institution changed recruitment and weakened the old professional structure. Ottoman concessions made to keep the corps loyal therefore helped erode the qualities that had once made it formidable.
