Chapter · 51:58-54:20

Jan Joosten and the red seal trading ships

Adams and his Dutch companion joined trading networks whose ships combined European and Japanese design features.

Notes

Jan Joosten gave Adams a trusted companion who had shared the voyage. Both became involved with red seal ships trading between Japan and other parts of Asia. Their vessels are described as combining Japanese forms with elements of Dutch and English ship design. Joosten's Japanese name also survives in the name of the area around Tokyo Station. Sparse surviving records leave aspects of his local activity uncertain.
