The Ceylon expedition was only one stage in Major General James Stewart's long Indian career. From 1799 he commanded the Bombay Army during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, occupied Coorg, and repulsed an attack by Tipu Sultan before joining the final campaign. Parliament formally thanked him for that service. He then fought in the Second Anglo-Maratha War in 1803 and did not return to Britain until ill health forced him home in 1805. The chronology explains why the 1795 expedition benefited from a commander whose regional experience continued to be valued in later wars.
