A 1920 trawler grounding ended in a complete crew rescue

James Fennell was ultimately lost after grounding near Portland, but local rescuer Albert Saunders helped all seventeen people aboard escape.

Notes

The book's 1920 entry follows the trawler James Fennell returning from Gibraltar to Portsmouth when thick fog drove her ashore near Portland. Distress rockets alerted local resident Albert Saunders, who helped catch and secure a line from the vessel. All seventeen people aboard were rescued. Saunders subsequently received the Royal Humane Society's bronze medal for his part in the operation. The ship remained aground until March, when efforts to haul her off ended with her capsizing and sinking, separating the successful rescue of the crew from the eventual loss of the vessel.
