James Allen Ward's climb onto a burning Wellington wing

A wartime magazine account follows Sergeant James Allen Ward out onto the wing of a burning Wellington bomber to fight an engine fire in flight.

Notes

The magazine's account follows a Wellington attacked by a Messerschmitt Bf 110 while returning from a raid. Fire spread from the starboard engine after a fuel pipe was damaged, and the crew prepared to abandon the aircraft. Ward tied on a rope, cut handholds and footholds in the fabric, and crawled onto the wing with an engine cover. Although the cover blew away, he brought the blaze under control and received the Victoria Cross for the action.
