How Scharnhorst was slowed enough for Jamaica to close

Boiler damage and destroyer torpedoes let Jamaica resume gunfire and launch her final torpedo attack.

Notes

Jamaica and Duke of York approached from the southwest to cut off Scharnhorst's retreat. Jamaica hit with her third broadside but ceased fire after nineteen volleys as the German ship opened the range in heavy seas. A shell from Duke of York damaged Scharnhorst's first boiler room, reducing her speed enough for destroyers to deliver four torpedo hits. The slower battleship then came under renewed fire from Duke of York and Jamaica at about 10,400 yards. After continued gunfire failed to sink her, Jamaica launched three torpedoes, of which two missed and one misfired. She turned to fire the other broadside, with two weapons appearing to hit before further British torpedo attacks and Scharnhorst's sinking.
