Jamaica fights off Korea and leads at Suez

Jamaica destroys North Korean coastal craft, supports the Inchon landings, and later coordinates the naval bombardment force at Port Said.

Notes

In Korean waters Jamaica works with HMS Black Swan and USS Juneau against North Korean coastal traffic, sinking three torpedo boats and two gunboats without Allied ship damage. She bombards captured harbor facilities at Kunsan, then helps prepare the Inchon landings and supports the southern flank and 1st Marine Regiment. A 75 mm coastal shell kills six and wounds five, so even a cruiser with overwhelming gun power remains vulnerable near shore. At dawn, Jamaica and USS Rochester are attacked by two Yakovlev piston-engined fighters. One strafes Jamaica, killing another sailor, before shipboard guns shoot it down. After refit and reserve service she plays HMS Exeter in the film The Battle of the River Plate. During the Suez Crisis she leads the Port Said bombardment force and coordinates support for Royal Marine landings. Restrictions intended to reduce civilian casualties keep her six-inch guns largely silent, leaving much of the firing to destroyers with smaller weapons. At Suez, political rules of engagement matter as much as the firepower available.
