Izumo-class armored cruisers and practical standardization

Izumo and Iwate combined modern protection and heavy quick-firing batteries with standardized weapons that simplified training across the armored-cruiser force.

Notes

The Izumo-class cruisers paired four 8-inch guns with a large quick-firing 6-inch battery, Krupp cemented armour, extensive subdivision, useful range, and more than 20 knots of speed. Their many protected compartments were intended to keep the ships afloat and fighting after damage. The 6-inch casemate battery covered a wide set of approach angles, while torpedoes gave the cruisers another short-range threat. Standard 8-inch turrets and a common emphasis on 6-inch weapons across the Six-Six armoured cruisers simplified cross-training. That commonality also made it easier to mobilize reserve crews and expand the active fleet quickly.
