Why Italy's war mattered even when its forces struggled

Italy forced Britain to commit major naval and military resources to the Mediterranean and North Africa, making Germany harder to defeat.

Notes

Italy is often reduced to jokes or omitted from narratives centered on Germany and Japan. That obscures the resources Britain had to commit to North Africa, Mediterranean convoys, and the Italian fleet. Without Italy in the war, those forces could have been used elsewhere against Germany or Japan. Uneven battlefield performance did not erase the substantial strategic burden Italy imposed on the Allies.
