Italy also forced Germany to support another active front while fighting the Soviet Union and preparing to resist the Western Allies in Normandy. Internal European routes did not remove the cost of sustaining three separate theatres. Each one drew on troops, fuel, supplies, and transport capacity. The Italian campaign therefore stretched German logistics and reduced the forces available against the Normandy landings.
