Dante Alighieri carried twelve 12-inch guns in only four turrets by adopting triple mountings. The arrangement produced a full twelve-gun broadside without the six twin turrets that the same barrel count would otherwise require. Russian designers later copied aspects of the Italian approach. Turret concentration was a separate innovation from the all-big-gun principle itself.
