The Italian Front tied down armies in mountain terrain

Mountain fighting required guns and supplies to reach positions that could later be too costly to clear.

Notes

The Italian-Austrian front imposed immense casualties while keeping Austrian forces from reinforcing other theatres as freely. Its terrain demanded mountain fighting, including positions accessible by climbing rather than walking. Field guns and supplies had to be hauled into those positions. After the war, some equipment stayed in place because retrieving it was too costly. The surviving guns and emplacements described here reflect the logistical difficulty of fighting in the mountains as well as the front's wider effect on enemy deployments.
