Why Italian wartime forces gained a poor reputation

German postwar self-promotion and Italy's different political memory helped turn difficult Italian campaigns into a stereotype of general incompetence.

Notes

The Regia Marina could be a capable opponent despite problems at the level of strategic command. The same caution applies to the Italian Army, whose performance in North Africa could be much harder to overcome than the familiar stereotype suggests. German veterans had an incentive after 1945 to blame former allies while presenting their own armed forces as useful partners against the Soviet Union. Italy, which had changed sides during the war, had less political reason to celebrate or defend service under the Fascist regime. This interpretation connects Italy's poor wartime reputation to the unequal incentives shaping German and Italian postwar accounts.
