Several familiar explanations for Italy's modest destroyer armament fail to account for the comparison with British ships. Maestrale was larger than the I class and smaller than Tribal, while shorter range did not explain the limited weapons fit. Riveting added weight compared with welding, but the difference was too small at destroyer scale to settle the question. The crew comparison also offered no simple answer: Maestrale carried 173 personnel, against a wartime complement of 145 cited for the I class and 190 for a Tribal, rising to 219 for flotilla leaders. At 106.7 metres long, Maestrale also lay between the 98.5-metre I class and 115-metre Tribal. The suggested explanation is that prioritising manoeuvrability at high speed prevented a fuller hull form from accommodating more equipment effectively. That remains an interpretation of the combined design choices.

Hull form and the missing Italian destroyer firepower
Comparisons of range, construction, crew, and dimensions leave hull form as the proposed explanation for Italy's limited armament.
