Italy's cruiser problem in the western Mediterranean

Italy needed cruisers either to reinforce its battle line or to lead fast torpedo raids against France, but its designs rarely settled cleanly on either role.

Notes

Italy expected to fight France in the western Mediterranean, which gave its cruisers two plausible jobs. Heavily protected ships could reinforce the battle line, while fast, expendable leaders could take destroyers into the western basin for torpedo raids. The raiding force would launch a large spread against a convoy or warship group and then withdraw. Those distinct missions provide a practical test for the later classes: could a design support battleships, deliver a decisive torpedo attack, or do neither well?
