Italian aircrews and the system around them need separate judgments. Individual pilots could be well trained and aggressive, and some Ju 87 attacks that British sailors remembered as German were flown by Italians. The larger weaknesses lay in equipment, doctrine, and especially strategic command. Aerial torpedo attacks also forced crews onto narrow, predictable approach paths, leaving even skilled attackers vulnerable to fighters. Poor institutional performance cannot be reduced to a stereotype about national fighting ability.
