Capable destroyers in insufficient numbers for the Adriatic

Italy's prewar shortage persisted despite capable designs; allied Adriatic support is interpreted as evidence of the missing hulls.

Notes

The eight Rosolino Pilo-class ships illustrate Italy's shortage of destroyers. The designs were fast, well balanced, heavily armed, and had sufficient range for their duties. Too few ships were available, and the shortfall inherited from the prewar years became apparent during World War I. Small allied forces supplied for Adriatic operations are interpreted as a response to that shortage.
