Developed from the Umikaze design, the Isokaze class roughly doubled the Kaba class's standard displacement to about 1,200 tons. Full-load displacement also rose from roughly 800 to almost 1,600 tons. These destroyers formed part of the Eight-Eight Fleet programme, whose planned battleships and battlecruisers needed escorts and protection. Steam turbines supported a speed of 34 knots and a range of about 4,000 nautical miles at 15 knots. The larger hulls supplied the endurance and performance required to accompany the projected battle fleet.
