Ironclads as a technological transition

Ironclad frigates began the disruptive move from sail-era ships of the line toward a new, eventually stable capital-ship form.

Notes

Naval design alternates between long-lived stable forms and turbulent periods when several technologies change at once. Ironclads begin a transition in which propulsion, protection, and armament no longer fit the old sailing-ship model. A stabilization point does not mean that every feature stops evolving, but that the warship's basic shape and organizing logic remain recognizable. The same framework helps compare the ironclad upheaval with later shifts from battleships to carrier forces and missile escorts.
