Iraq and Iran widened the Indian Ocean war

British intervention in Iraq and Iran, alongside the suppression of the Italian naval threat, tied the ocean's western approaches to political and land campaigns in the Middle East.

Notes

The Royal Navy's 1941 work extended beyond convoy escort and the hunt for raiders. The service helped neutralize the Regia Marina threat in the region while British forces intervened in Iraq and Iran because their governments were distrusted. Naval operations were therefore bound up with political intervention and campaigns ashore. Those commitments also help explain why experienced troops and officers were drawn west before Japan entered the war.
