The armoured-cruiser line had already tested ideas about layout and hull shape that fed into HMS Dreadnought. The British battleship line supplied experience with guns and fire control. Both strands matter when considering whether a cruiser could adopt Dreadnought's layout while keeping cruiser-calibre guns. The proposed ship would reuse an exchange of ideas between the two types that was already under way.
