Chapter · 54:11-56:06

What Asquith could count as a capital ship

A cruiser programme could attract more imperial participation while giving the British government fewer ships it could present as capital units.

Notes

Fisher and Tirpitz face choices about what their navies should build. Asquith and Bethmann Hollweg also have to consider what their governments can gain politically from those programmes. A battlecruiser quickly acquired the public and parliamentary standing of a battleship. The alternative cruisers would give Asquith fewer hulls to count as capital ships, but they could win support from Dominions and others who had a direct use for them.
