Chapter · 9:11-11:11

SMS Blücher in a battlecruiser squadron

Blücher's machinery and gunnery show why a capable armoured cruiser could become a poor fit for the First Scouting Group.

Notes

The German Blücher was a plausible large cruiser for a navy that expected other countries to keep building ships of the same type. At roughly 17,500 tons fully loaded, she is credited with 25.4 knots on triple-expansion engines and a battery of 21 cm L/45 guns. The range figures given include about 3,350 nautical miles at 18 knots and 6,600 at 12 knots. That speed and armament had value in a cruiser fight. Alongside turbine-powered battlecruisers with battleship-grade guns, she became a constraint on the First Scouting Group.
