A superfiring arrangement for Invincible would have required a longer hull, with raised guns firing over lower turrets. A narrower beam would improve the length-to-beam ratio for high speed, but the resulting hull would also change the ship's manoeuvrability. Large cruisers still needed to move effectively in the places where they maintained a distant naval presence. Their turret layout therefore depended on cruising requirements as well as firing arcs and machinery space.

Invincible's turret layout and manoeuvrability
A superfiring layout required a longer, narrower hull, linking gun placement and speed to the manoeuvrability needed for cruising duties.
