If Invincible preceded Dreadnought

An alternate launch order for Invincible and Dreadnought changes how foreign navies interpret the all-big-gun revolution and may improve Dreadnought's turret layout.

Question

What changes if Fisher builds and launches the Invincible class before HMS Dreadnought?

Short answer

Dreadnought might emerge with a better superfiring layout, while other navies first confront the revolution through fast all-big-gun cruisers.

Notes

The panel suggests that building the battlecruisers first would make their speed and all-big-gun armament the initial shock to foreign observers. Dreadnought, arriving afterward, might incorporate superfiring turrets because design criticism would already have exposed the limitations of wing positions. A longer, narrower hull and Yarrow-type boilers might also make her a 23- or 24-knot battleship. That leaves the 25-knot Invincibles too slow to sustain the distinction between armoured cruiser and battlecruiser. The altered sequence could therefore push British design earlier toward the fast battleship and prevent the follow-on Indefatigable class.
