Invergordon becomes a disciplined work-to-rule protest

On 15 September, refusals to sail and limits on routine work preserved essential safety duties, while chiefs relayed demands and Royal Marines joined the protest.

Notes

Repulse sailed at 0630 on 15 September, while Hood and Nelson refused to put to sea but continued ordinary harbor routines. Valiant and Rodney limited work to essential duties such as safety patrols and fire guards, which sailors maintained without officers having to direct them. Chiefs organized the work and communicated the crews' refusal to officers. Sailors gathered and sang on deck, with Rodney's piano accompanying bawdy music-hall songs. On Hood, sailors obstructed unmooring, although how much force either side attempted to use is left uncertain. Royal Marines joined the sailors despite their expected role in suppressing mutiny. Tomkinson suspended exercises, cancelled leave, and pressed for the complaints to be investigated quickly.
