Why interwar sloops mattered

An introduction to sloops as small, naval-standard ships whose work reached every part of the Second World War.

Notes

Sloops were the forgotten ships of the interwar years and the Second World War. They appeared in almost every kind of operation without attracting the attention given to capital ships. Unlike emergency-built small escorts, a sloop was built to full naval standards, even when it looked modest beside a cruiser or destroyer. That construction standard helps explain how the type handled demanding work across a long service life.
