Interwar work prepared the landing craft used in World War II

Gallipoli and other First World War landings prompted years of work on craft and doctrine before the amphibious operations of World War II.

Notes

The landing craft used during World War II grew out of sustained development before the war. British work followed the experience of Gallipoli and other landings during World War I. It included landing techniques and doctrine as well as the craft themselves, with the United States pursuing comparable work. Years of experimentation and testing preceded the large wartime operations, which makes rapid acquisition a poor measure of amphibious proficiency.
